SHIMANO HIGH GRADE JOCKEY WHEELS
Precision Bearings for Smooth, Efficient Shifting.
In the Shimano ecosystem, jockey wheels (pulleys) are divided into three distinct performance tiers: Standard, High-Grade, and Premium. While standard pulleys often use simple bushings, Shimano's High-Grade and Premium sets utilize sealed precision cartridge bearings. This significantly reduces drivetrain friction, improves shifting speed under load, and ensures a quieter ride. Because these pulleys are the fastest-spinning components on your bike, upgrading to a high-grade set is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve mechanical efficiency.
Shimano designs these sets with specific tooth profiles for the Guide Pulley (upper) and Tension Pulley (lower). The upper pulley often features a small amount of lateral "float" to help the chain find the sprocket perfectly, while the lower pulley is typically more rigid to maintain chain tension. Using a genuine high-grade replacement ensures you maintain the precise indexing intended for your specific groupset.
Key Performance Tiers
Premium Grade (Dura-Ace / XTR): The absolute pinnacle of Shimano engineering. These feature sealed precision bearings in both the upper and lower pulleys. XTR models often include a mud-shedding design, while Dura-Ace sets are optimized for the lowest possible rotational drag.
High Grade (Ultegra / Deore XT): The "sweet spot" for performance and value. These sets typically use a sealed bearing for the tension pulley and either a sealed bearing or a high-quality ceramic bushing for the guide pulley (depending on the specific generation).
Standard Grade (105 / SLX / Deore): Reliable and functional, these usually rely on steel or ceramic bushings. While durable, they have slightly higher friction and more play than the bearing-equipped high-grade versions.
Compatibility & Fitment Guide
To ensure crisp shifting, you must match the pulley set to your specific rear derailleur model. Below are the most common high-grade sets and the derailleurs they are designed to fit:
| Pulley Set Model | Series / Speed | Compatible Rear Derailleurs (RD) |
| Dura-Ace R9250 | 12-Speed Road | RD-R9250, RD-R9270 |
| Dura-Ace R9100 | 11-Speed Road | RD-R9100, RD-R9150 (Di2) |
| Ultegra R8150 | 12-Speed Road | RD-R8150 |
| Ultegra R8000 | 11-Speed Road | RD-R8000, RD-R8050, RD-RX800, RD-RX805 |
| XTR M9100 | 12-Speed MTB | RD-M9100, RD-M9120 |
| XTR M9000 | 11-Speed MTB | RD-M9000, RD-M9050 (Di2) |
| XT M8100 | 12-Speed MTB | RD-M8100, RD-M8120, RD-M8130 |
| XT M8000 | 11-Speed MTB | RD-M8000, RD-M8050, RD-RX812, RD-RX817 |
✅ Why This IS For You
Drivetrain Perfectionists: If you notice your shifting has become "mushy" or noisy, even after a fresh cable and tune-up, worn pulley bushings are the likely culprit.
High-Mileage Riders: If you ride more than 5,000km a year, the sealed bearings in high-grade pulleys will last significantly longer than the bushings in standard sets.
The "Upgrade" Enthusiast: Many Shimano 11 and 12-speed pulleys are cross-compatible within their speed family. You can often "upgrade" an SLX or 105 derailleur by installing XT or Ultegra pulleys for smoother operation.
❌ Why This May NOT be for you
Mixed-Brand Drivetrains: Shimano pulleys are specifically shaped for Shimano chains. If you are running a SRAM or Campagnolo drivetrain, these pulleys will cause poor indexing and increased wear.
Budget Commuters: If your bike is purely for short trips in the rain and you don't mind a tiny bit of extra friction, the Standard Grade (105/Deore) pulleys offer great durability for a fraction of the price.
BFC Pro Tip
When installing your new jockey wheels, look closely at the side of the pulley—there is usually a small arrow indicating the direction of rotation. Installing them backward can cause noisy shifting and increased chain wear. Also, the Guide Pulley (Upper) and Tension Pulley (Lower) are different! The upper pulley usually has "G-Pulley" printed on it and has slightly taller teeth to help with shifting. If you swap them by mistake, your bike will shift, but it will never feel quite as sharp as it should!
