SHIMANO M520 PEDAL BLACK
The Indestructible Benchmark for Clipless Performance.
The Shimano PD-M520 is arguably the most successful mountain bike pedal ever made. For over two decades, it has been the "gold standard" for riders transitioning from flat pedals to a clipless system. Known for its legendary reliability and "set-and-forget" durability, the M520 offers a dual-sided entry that makes clipping in intuitive and fast, whether you are lining up for a local XC race, commuting through Perth traffic, or exploring the technical trails of the Perth Hills.
While it is positioned as an entry-level pedal, the M520 shares the same core SPD (Shimano Pedaling Dynamics) mechanism found in the top-tier XT and XTR models. This means you get the same crisp "click" and secure connection as the pros, but with a robust, heavy-duty body designed to withstand years of rock strikes, mud, and neglect. It is the ultimate "workhorse" pedal that defines the Shimano reputation for engineering parts that simply refuse to quit.
The SPD Advantage
Dual-Sided Entry: Unlike road-specific pedals, the M520 allows you to clip in on either side, which is essential for quickly getting moving again after a mid-trail stall or at a busy intersection.
Mud-Shedding Design: The open-body design features large clearances that allow mud and debris to be pushed through when you step into the pedal, ensuring a reliable connection even in the wettest winter conditions.
Adjustable Tension: Features a simple 3mm Hex bolt on each side that allows you to customise the release tension. You can set it "Light" for easy exit while learning, or "Firm" for maximum security during sprints and technical climbs.
Sealed Cartridge Axle: The chromoly steel spindle rotates on a sealed bearing system that keeps out water and grit, maintaining a smooth spin for thousands of kilometres without needing an overhaul.
Key Features
Compact Body Design: A minimalist profile that provides excellent ground clearance, reducing the risk of pedal strikes when pedalling through rutted-out singletrack.
Included Cleats (SM-SH51): Every set comes with a pair of Shimano single-release cleats, providing everything you need to get started (provided you have SPD-compatible shoes).
Low Maintenance: While the bearings are sealed, the axle unit is completely serviceable with a standard Shimano TL-PD40 tool, allowing for easy regreasing if they eventually dry out.
Stealth Black Finish: A durable, powder-coated black finish that maintains a clean, professional look even after the inevitable scratches from trail debris.

✅ Why This IS For You
Clipless Beginners: If you are new to clipping in, the adjustable tension and dual-sided entry make this the safest and most intuitive pedal to start your journey.
Daily Commuters: Perfect for riders who need a durable, reliable pedal that can handle rain, salt, and grime day after day with zero maintenance.
Gravel & XC Riders: Ideal for those who want a low-profile, lightweight-style pedal that offers a secure connection for efficient power transfer on long rides.
❌ Why This May NOT be for you
Aggressive Enduro/DH Riders: If you frequently ride without being clipped in (or "dab" your feet often), a pedal with a supportive outer platform like the Shimano PD-ME700 provides more stability.
Strict Weight-Weenies: While reliable, the M520 uses a steel axle and aluminum body; the Shimano XT M8100 saves about 40g and offers a slightly lower stack height.
BFC Pro Tip
The Shimano M520 is famous for its longevity, but a little setup goes a long way. When you first install them, we recommend winding the tension bolts all the way to the "Minus (-)" setting. This makes it incredibly easy to "click out" while you are building your muscle memory. As you become more confident, you can gradually click the tension up. Also, always apply a small amount of waterproof grease to the pedal threads before screwing them into your cranks—this prevents "cold welding" and ensures you can actually get them off again in a few years!
