SRAM GX TYPE 2.1 10 SPEED REAR DERAILLEUR
The Versatile Trail Workhorse.
The SRAM GX Type 2.1 10-Speed is a high-performance rear derailleur designed to replace the legendary X7 and X9 models. It features Exact Actuation™ for precise, consistent shifting across the entire 10-speed range and Roller Bearing Clutch™ technology to eliminate derailleur bounce and chain slap—crucial for quiet, reliable performance on rough terrain.
The "Type 2.1" update specifically improves the Cage Lock™ mechanism, which allows you to lock the derailleur cage in a forward position to create slack, making wheel removal and chain installation significantly easier.
Cage Length Comparison
Choosing the right cage length is essential for managing "chain wrap"—the amount of slack the derailleur can take up when shifting between different chainring and cassette combinations.

✅ Why This IS For You
Aggressive Trail Riders: The Roller Bearing Clutch is a game-changer for 10-speed users, keeping the chain tight and preventing it from falling off in technical sections.
1x10 Conversion Fans: The Short Cage version is highly sought after for 1x builds because its shorter profile provides better ground clearance and snappier shifting.
Value-Focused Upgraders: It offers nearly identical performance to the more expensive X0 models but uses more durable (though slightly heavier) aluminum and steel construction.
❌ Why This May NOT be for you
Shimano Shifter Users: This derailleur uses Exact Actuation (1:1 ratio) and is not compatible with Shimano shifters. You must use a SRAM 10-speed mountain shifter.
Extreme Wide-Range 1x10: While people often "hack" the Medium cage to fit a 42T cog, it is officially rated for a 36T max. If you are running a 10-50T or 11-46T 10-speed setup, you may need a derailleur with a different offset or a "GoatLink."
Weight-Sensitive Racers: At approximately 302g (Long Cage), it is a sturdy workhorse rather than a featherweight racing component.
BFC Pro Tip
If you are running a 1x10 setup on a bike with small wheels (24" or 26"), always opt for the Short Cage if your cassette range allows it. Long cage derailleurs on small wheels hang dangerously close to the ground, significantly increasing the risk of catching a rock or stick and snapping your derailleur hanger.
