Science in Sport (SiS): The Lab-to-Podium Revolution

In the high-stakes world of professional cycling, where races are won or lost by mere millimetres, Science in Sport (SiS) has spent decades proving that nutrition is just as critical as the bike itself. Founded in 1992 by Tim Lawson in London, the brand was born from a desire to move away from the "sugary syrups" of the past and toward evidence-based performance fuel. From its inception, SiS has been a staple in the professional peloton, arguably doing more to modernise the "marginal gains" philosophy than any other nutrition brand in history.

While many companies focus on flavour profiles, SiS focuses on osmolarity. They famously launched the GO Isotonic Gel, the world’s first truly isotonic energy gel. Unlike traditional gels that require a wash of water to be absorbed, the SiS design matches the fluid concentration of the human cell, allowing it to empty from the stomach rapidly without causing the "gut rot" that has plagued cyclists for generations. This dedication to science has made them the primary fuel source for the INEOS Grenadiers (formerly Team Sky) for over a decade, supporting them through seven Tour de France victories.

Lesser-Known Facts

• The "Informed Sport" Gold Standard: SiS is the only brand globally to hold both Informed Sport Site Certification and Informed Sport Product Certification. This means every single batch of product that leaves their Lancashire factory is screened against the WADA banned substance list. For a pro rider, a positive test is a career-ender; SiS provides the ultimate insurance policy.

• The Beta Fuel Miracle: In the 2018 Giro d'Italia, Chris Froome executed one of the most legendary solo breakaways in modern history on Stage 19. This was largely credited to a "secret" high-carbohydrate drink developed by SiS called Beta Fuel, which used a 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose to allow for 80–120g of carbohydrate intake per hour—levels previously thought impossible for the human stomach to process.

• Not Just for Humans: In the early days of sports science research, the founders were so committed to testing that they often used themselves as "human lab rats," monitoring blood glucose levels every few minutes during 100-mile test rides to perfect their formulas.

A Darker Note: The Weight of Expectations

The "darker" side of the elite sports nutrition world is the immense pressure and the "win at all costs" culture that brands like SiS must navigate. While SiS prides itself on anti-doping, they have often found themselves at the centre of the "grey area" debates in cycling. During the height of the Team Sky era, the brand's association with "Total Performance" was scrutinized during the UK Parliament’s investigation into the team’s use of TUEs (Therapeutic Use Exemptions). While SiS was never implicated in any wrongdoing, the era highlighted the fine line between "scientific advantage" and the ethical boundaries of modern professional sport, where the search for a legal "secret sauce" can sometimes create a culture of extreme medicalisation.

Engaging the Modern Rider

Today, SiS is the engine behind over 330 elite teams and athletes, including the Australian Cycling Team and Loughborough University. In 2026, their focus has shifted toward "Performance Solutions," creating bespoke nutrition programmes tailored to the individual sweat rates and metabolic profiles of riders. For the Australian cyclist, whether you’re tackling the "Three Peaks" or a local criterium, SiS offers the same pharmaceutical-grade precision used by the world’s best, ensuring your "fuel tank" is the last thing you have to worry about.
