DT SWISS EXP 54T UPGRADE KIT
The DT Swiss EXP 54T Upgrade Kit is the ultimate performance modification for riders looking to maximize the responsiveness of their high-end DT Swiss wheelsets. By tripling the engagement points of a standard 18-tooth setup or significantly stepping up from a 36-tooth configuration, this premium kit reduces the engagement angle to a lightning-fast 6.7 degrees. This means the moment you apply force to your pedals, your rear wheel responds instantly—an invaluable advantage when navigating technical uphill rock gardens, accelerating out of tight berms, or timing crucial power moves on steep terrain.
Engineered with DT Swiss's signature Ratchet EXP technology, this kit utilizes a clever single-spring design that integrates the inner ratchet directly into the threaded ring. This fusion decreases the total number of moving components, which not only shaves structural weight from the freehub mechanism but also inherently improves reliability by perfectly aligning the teeth every single time. Every tooth engages simultaneously to distribute heavy torque loads evenly across a massive surface area, vastly outperforming traditional pawl-based hubs. Complete with a tub of specialized Molykote grease and a replacement shim ring, this kit provides a premium, long-lasting performance refresh that completely transforms your ride dynamics.
Key Features
Rapid 6.7-Degree Engagement: Features a precision-engineered 54-tooth interface that slashes freehub lag for immediate power delivery and snappy acceleration.
Streamlined EXP Architecture: Utilizes a single straight spring design that lowers the overall component count, optimizing mechanical alignment and reducing internal friction.
Simultaneous Tooth Interlock: Unlike standard multi-pawl systems that put high point loads on individual teeth, all 54 teeth engage at once to distribute extreme pedalling forces evenly.
Lightweight Drivetrain Precision: Advanced hollow-machined steel construction eliminates rotating mass at the hub center without sacrificing long-term durability.
Complete Service Kit Included: Comes packaged with two premium star ratchets, a dedicated EXP spring, an alignment shim ring, and authentic DT Swiss special lubricant.

✅ High-Performance Upgrade: You want to eliminate the frustrating "dead spot" in your pedal stroke and achieve instantaneous power transfer when accelerating.
✅ Technical Trail Master: You frequently tackle punchy, technical climbs where precise pedal timing and immediate hub engagement prevent you from stalling out.
✅ Weight-Conscious Builder: You appreciate clever Swiss engineering that reduces overall freehub mass while simultaneously increasing mechanical strength.
✅ Premium Wheel Maintenance: Your high-end DT Swiss 180 or 240 wheelset is due for a scheduled overhaul, and you want to refresh the internals with the best parts available.
✅ Crisp Acoustic Signature: You love the premium, high-frequency, mechanical "buzz" that a high-engagement hub generates while coasting down the trail.
❌ Standard Ratchet Owner: Your wheels use the classic dual-spring DT Swiss Ratchet system (found on older 350/240s hubs) or the new LN/DEG systems; this kit is strictly for the single-spring EXP design.
❌ Suspension Kickback Concerns: You ride a full-suspension mountain bike with high anti-squat geometry; ultra-fast engagement can sometimes increase pedal kickback over rough terrain.
❌ Home Mechanic Lacking Tools: You plan to handle the full installation completely on your own; a specialized DT Swiss EXP threaded ring removal tool is required to pull the internal assembly.
BFC PRO TIP
When installing your new 54T EXP kit, less is definitely more when it comes to lubrication. Apply only a very thin, translucent layer of the included DT Swiss special grease to the ratchet teeth using a clean small brush or your finger. Over-packing the internal teeth with thick grease can actually cause the single spring to stick, leading to dangerous freehub slipping or premature tooth wear. Never use standard heavy bearing grease or liquid chain lubes in this system, as they will cause the precise 54-tooth mechanism to fail to engage properly.
