SHIMANO RD-RX400 GUIDE & TENSION PULLEY WHEELS
The Shimano RD-RX400 Guide & Tension Pulley Set restores the original crispness and mechanical efficiency to your 10-speed gravel drivetrain. It ensures smooth chain management across rough, off-road terrain.
The Shimano RD-RX400 Guide & Tension Pulley Set is a genuine factory replacement engineered specifically to preserve the reliable, smooth-shifting performance of your GRX 10-speed rear derailleur. Gravel riding subjects your bike's drivetrain to an intense cocktail of dust, mud, grit, and grit. Over hundreds of kilometres, this abrasive debris acts like sandpaper, slowly wearing down the teeth of your original jockey wheels. This deterioration leads to sluggish shifting, ghost shifts, and increased mechanical drag. Replacing your worn units with this factory-spec kit instantly eliminates drivetrain slop, returning your gear changes to their quick, factory-fresh accuracy.
Constructed from a highly durable, fibre-reinforced composite resin, these 11-tooth pulleys are structurally optimised to absorb chain vibration and reduce noise, providing a quiet, efficient ride even when cross-chaining on rugged gravel fire trails. Both the upper guide pulley and lower tension pulley are equipped with high-grade, sealed precision steel sleeves that shield the moving parts from moisture and dirt ingress. This robust construction minimises long-term mechanical friction and protects your chain from premature wear, ensuring that every watt of your pedalling effort is cleanly transferred directly to the rear tyre.
Key Features

Why This IS For You
✅ Restoring Crisp Shifts: Your 10-speed GRX drivetrain is feeling slow or lazy when moving across the cassette, and you want to restore its factory-fresh shifting snap.
✅ 10-Speed Gravel Rider: Your bike is equipped with a standard Shimano GRX RD-RX400 rear derailleur and is due for a scheduled drivetrain overhaul.
✅ High-Mileage Maintenance: You ride in demanding, muddy, or dusty off-road conditions and your current jockey wheels have worn down to sharp "shark tooth" profiles.
✅ Budget-Friendly Upkeep: You want an affordable, highly reliable, genuine mechanical replacement without paying the premium cost of ceramic aftermarket upgrades.
✅ Quiet Drivetrain Seekers: You want to eliminate annoying high-frequency chain buzz and vibration when spinning up steep, unpaved backroad climbs.
Why This May NOT Be For You
❌ 11 or 12-Speed GRX Setups: Your bicycle uses a higher-tier 11-speed (RX810) or 12-speed (RX820) GRX drivetrain, which requires alternative tooth spacing and cage designs.
❌ High-End Bearing Upgrades: You are strictly looking for an aftermarket upgrade featuring ceramic hybrid bearings or oversized alloy pulleys to minimise marginal gains.
❌ Non-Shimano Drivetrains: Your gravel setup uses a SRAM or Campagnolo rear derailleur; these pulleys are engineered to match the precise bolt diameter and cage spacing of Shimano.
BFC PRO TIP
While these two jockey wheels look virtually identical at first glance, they are designed to perform entirely different jobs. The top guide pulley features a tiny amount of engineered lateral play to help the chain align perfectly beneath your cassette teeth during a shift, while the bottom tension pulley is completely rigid. When installing them, look for the small arrow stamped into the plastic on the lower tension pulley; it must face and rotate in the direction of the chain's forward travel. Be sure to clean away all old grit from inside the derailleur cage plates before bolting them in, and apply a tiny smear of marine grease inside the steel dust caps to add an extra layer of protection against stream crossings and washday overspray!
