SHIMANO SH-RX910 PONTOON
The "Road-Feel" Upgrade for Gravel.
The Shimano SH-RX910 Pontoon is a revolutionary component designed specifically for the flagship S-PHYRE RX910 gravel racing shoe. For years, gravel riders have had to choose between the efficiency of a road pedal and the walkability of an MTB shoe. This system eliminates that compromise by using replaceable TPU "pontoons" that sit on either side of a standard 2-bolt SPD cleat.
By bridging the gap between the shoe and the pedal body, the pontoons create a much larger contact surface, mimicking the rock-solid stability of a road-specific SPD-SL system while retaining the mud-clearing and walking capabilities of a gravel shoe.
Key Features
Maximized Pedal Interface: Dramatically increases the contact area between the shoe and the pedal, reducing "foot roll" and improving power transfer during high-torque efforts.
Modular & Replaceable: Unlike molded lugs that wear down over time and ruin the shoe, these pontoons can be easily swapped for a fresh set to restore "like-new" pedaling stability.
Dynamic Cleat Alignment: The pontoons are designed to move in tandem with your cleat, ensuring the contact blocks are perfectly positioned regardless of your preferred cleat angle or fore/aft placement.
Optimized Walkability: Provides a stable, level platform for your foot when off the bike, preventing the "skating" feeling often associated with minimal gravel outsoles.
System Engineered: While compatible with all SPD pedals, they are mathematically optimized for use with Shimano XTR (M9100) and XT (M8100) pedals for the tightest possible interface.

✅ Why This IS For You
Elite Gravel Racers: If you are racing 100km+ events, the increased stability reduces foot fatigue and hotspotting over long hours in the saddle.
Road-to-Gravel Converts: If you are used to the broad, secure feeling of road pedals (SPD-SL) and find standard MTB pedals too "floaty" or small, this is the solution you've been waiting for.
Maintenance-Minded Riders: Instead of buying new shoes when your tread wears down, you can simply replace the pontoons for a fraction of the cost to maintain peak performance.
❌ Why This May NOT be for you
Other Shoe Owners: This system is physically incompatible with previous Shimano models (like the RX801) or other brands. The RX910 has a specific recessed mounting zone for these blocks.
Non-Shimano Pedals: While they can work with some other 2-bolt brands (like Crankbrothers), the tolerances are designed strictly for Shimano SPD. Using other pedals may cause difficulty clipping in or out.
Bikepacking / Hike-a-Bike: If your "gravel" involves 50% walking through rock gardens, a traditional MTB shoe with deeper, more aggressive rubber lugs (like the Shimano XC9) will provide better traction.
BFC Pro Tip
The RX910 must be used with this pontoon system. Riding without them not only makes the shoe feel unstable but can actually lead to unintended "step-outs" because the cleat sits too high relative to the rest of the sole. When installing, ensure the arrows on the pontoons are pointing toward the front of the shoe—installing them backward will interfere with the pedal mechanism and make clipping in nearly impossible!
