SHIMANO STANDARD JOCKEY WHEELS
The Durable, Reliable Workhorse for Everyday Performance.
Shimano Standard-Grade Jockey Wheels are the unsung heroes of the cycling world. Found on the vast majority of mid-range road, mountain, and hybrid bikes, these pulleys are designed for maximum longevity and consistent shifting in all weather conditions. Unlike high-grade or premium versions that rely on sensitive cartridge bearings, standard-grade sets typically use high-quality steel or ceramic bushings.
The beauty of a bushing-based system is its simplicity and resistance to "seizing." In the gritty, sandy conditions often found on Western Australian trails or limestone paths, a bushing is far less likely to be compromised by fine dust than a cheap bearing. While they may have a fraction more rotational friction than a Dura-Ace pulley, they offer a "fit-and-forget" reliability that makes them the ideal choice for commuters, weekend warriors, and high-mileage touring cyclists.
The "Standard" Design Philosophy
Self-Lubricating Bushings: Most standard sets (105, Tiagra, Deore, SLX) utilize a precision-ground steel sleeve inside a nylon pulley. This design allows the pulley to spin freely even if it gets a little dirty.
Centeron G-Pulley Technology: The upper (Guide) pulley is designed with a specific amount of lateral "float." This allows the chain to self-align with the cassette teeth, compensating for minor cable stretch or indexing imperfections.
Tough Composite Construction: Made from a high-impact resin that is incredibly resistant to wear and chemical degreasers, ensuring the tooth profile remains sharp for thousands of kilometers.
Directional Tooth Profiles: Even at the standard level, Shimano shapes the teeth to pick up and release the chain as efficiently as possible, maintaining that signature "Shimano click" during shifts.
Compatibility & Fitment Guide
Standard-grade pulleys are specific to the "speed" of your drivetrain (e.g., 10-speed vs 11-speed). Below are the most common standard sets and the rear derailleurs (RD) they are designed to fit:
| Pulley Set Model | Series / Speed | Compatible Rear Derailleurs (RD) |
| Shimano 105 R7000 | 11-Speed Road | RD-R7000, RD-5800 |
| Shimano SLX M7000 | 11-Speed MTB | RD-M7000-11, RD-M8000 (Budget Alt) |
| Shimano Deore M6100 | 12-Speed MTB | RD-M6100, RD-M5100 |
| Shimano Deore M6000 | 10-Speed MTB | RD-M6000, RD-M615, RD-T6000 |
| Shimano Tiagra 4700 | 10-Speed Road | RD-4700, RD-4601 |
| Shimano Sora R3000 | 9-Speed Road | RD-R3000, RD-3500 |
✅ Why This IS For You
The Daily Commuter: If you ride your bike to work every day through rain, mud, and dust, these bushing-based pulleys will survive the abuse far better than entry-level bearing pulleys.
Value-Focused Riders: If you are looking for a cost-effective way to refresh your drivetrain without spending double the price for a marginal gain in "wattage" savings.
Gravel & MTB Explorers: Ideal for those who find themselves in sandy or muddy environments where a sealed bearing might eventually "crunch" or seize.
❌ Why This May NOT be for you
Performance Racers: If you are chasing every single marginal gain for Criterium racing or Time Trials, the Ultegra or Dura-Ace bearing-equipped pulleys offer less drag.
Drivetrain "Weight-Weenies": Standard pulleys use steel bushings which are slightly heavier than the titanium or ceramic hardware found in the premium sets.
BFC Pro Tip
Standard pulleys are the most common victims of "Gunk Buildup." Over time, a mix of chain lube and road grit forms a hard, black ring around the pulley. This can eventually lead to your chain "jumping" or poor shifting. When you clean your bike, use a flat-head screwdriver to gently scrape this buildup off. You’ll be amazed at how much quieter your drivetrain becomes once the pulleys are clean! When installing, remember that the upper Guide Pulley usually has "float" (side-to-side play), while the lower Tension Pulley is fixed—don't panic, that play is supposed to be there!
