The secret to a perfect single-speed conversion is the chain line. Before tightening your lockring, stand behind the bike and sight the chain from the rear cog to the front chainring—it should be a perfectly straight line. If it’s angled, swap your spacers around until it’s dialed. Also, if your frame has vertical dropouts, remember that you’ll likely need a chain tensioner to take up the slack since you no longer have a derailleur to do the job!
