If the plastic mounting plugs feel a bit too stiff to push fully into the handlebar grip ends during winter, don't force them or hammer them, as you might bend the plastic shafts. Fill a mug with warm water and soak just the plastic plug ends for 30 seconds to soften the material, then wipe them dry and slide them into the bar ends. As the plastic cools down inside the grip, it will expand slightly and create a tight, locked-in fit that prevents your child from accidentally pulling them out while riding!
